How concentrated the quarter was
Of the £31.2bn in valued awards, the 10 largest suppliers took 52% and the 20 largest took 66%, between 2,223 suppliers in all. A market where a small number of names take a large share of the value is one where smaller firms compete for what is left.
What the data does not show
These figures count award value by supplier, not by company size. The published notice data does not reliably record whether a winning supplier is a small or medium-sized business, so this cannot say how much reached SMEs. That gap is itself worth noting: the public record shows who won and for how much, but not whether the stated aim of spending more with smaller firms is being met.
Methodology
Computed once, from contract award notices published between 2026-04-01 and 2026-07-01 (the notice publication date, not the award date), drawn from the UK public procurement notice feeds. Award value is attributed to the winning supplier named on each notice; where a notice names one supplier and a single value, that value is attributed to them, and where notices break value down by supplier, those amounts are used. Awards with no usable value (3,930 supplier records in this window) are excluded from the totals. Suppliers are grouped by resolved organisation, so name variants for the same firm are combined; that resolution is careful but not perfect, so a very large group could be split across two spellings. Figures are as published and are not adjusted for later amendments. Supplier records whose notice carries a withheld name or free text instead of an organisation name (9 in this window) are excluded from the ranking and the totals.
