National Highways Limited has handed a £39.6m contract to National Grid Electricity Transmission PLC to relocate critical transmission infrastructure blocking the Lower Thames Crossing development.

The work covers diversion of National Grid's 4YN route to allow National Highways to build the crossing road scheme. Utilities relocation is a standard precursor to major infrastructure projects; National Grid will undertake the physical works to move its own assets out of the development footprint.

The contract was awarded and published on 18 June 2026. National Highways is based at Three Snowhill, Snow Hill Queensway, Birmingham.
